Samuel Johnstone is a UK/Germany sound artist with a focus on ecological research and mixed media composition. His practice uses sound as a tool of artistic inquiry to explore ecological spaces, and to sound out to the messy and noisy ways in which human activity is embedded within these spaces.
Artistic research projects have been conducted at Botanic Garden Höxter, Darmstädter Ferienkurse and KreativInstitut.OWL. Installations and concert works have been presented at Hellerau Festspielhaus Dresden, Konzerthaus Berlin, Frequenz Festival Kiel, Klangwerkstatt Berlin, Unerhörte Musik and Neue Musik in Fläming, and been performed by ensembles including El Perro Andaluz and Ensemble UnitedBerlin.
Samuel studied composition with Stefan Prins and Manos Tsangaris at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden as well as with Helmut Zapf and Robert Saxton, and received masterclasses from George Lewis, Chaya Czernowin, Malin Bång and Simon Steen-Anderson. He also completed studies in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, University of London, studying Javanese Gamelan, Okinawan Sanshin and Japanese Noizu. He is currently working as an Artistic Research Associate at the KreativInstitut.OWL, and is the founder of unmusic for the production and management of experimental projects.
